City Appeals Planned Ferry Service to Fort Baker

Post Date:01/26/2018 2:55 p.m.

On December 6, 2017, the City of San Francisco filed a Preliminary Mitigated Negative Declaration for a planned Alcatraz Ferry Embarkation Project. One component of the project is to initiate weekend ferry service between Pier 31½ and Fort Baker, which is located at the City of Sausalito's southern boundary. To make ferry service to Fort Baker possible, the project plans call for upgrades to the existing pier at Fort Baker. According to the plans, the upgrades would begin in 2023.

In late December 2017, the City of Sausalito filed an appeal to the Preliminary Mitigated Negative Declaration. In the appeal, the City argued that the project's proposal to provide ferry service between Pier 31½ and Fort Baker would substantially increase pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic along Alexander Avenue, as well as in the Marin Headlands and Sausalito. The additional visitors and traffic would exacerbate what are often severe, over-crowded conditions within Sausalito's historic downtown and waterfront. For these and other reasons, the appeal states that the City of San Francisco must either prepare an Environmental Impact Report to fully assess the potential direct and indirect impacts of the proposed Fort Baker ferry service or remove the Fort Baker component from the project.

The San Francisco Planning Commission is scheduled to consider Sausalito's appeal of the project on February 22, 2018. Keep an eye on future editions of Sausalito Currents for updates on the appeal and information about public meetings related to Fort Baker ferry service. Any questions or comments about the City of Sausalito's appeal may be directed to City Clerk and Assistant City Manager Lilly Whalen at (415) 289-4134 or lwhalen@sausalito.gov.
