The Role of the Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee

  • Provide a forum to share comments, issues or concerns regarding public safety, including but not limited to crime prevention, community outreach, policing programs, and disaster preparedness education and training.
  • Foster stronger police/community relationships as it relates to Community Policing. Community policing is the philosophy of the police and the community working in partnership to address issues and develop lasting solutions to crime, quality of life, and public disorder.
  • Encourage public participation in crime reduction strategies, including but not limited to the following:
    1. Neighborhood meetings
    2. Web-based and other community networks
  • Review and recommend changes to the City's Disaster Plan and City-wide evacuation plan
  • Provide recommendations to the City Council on disaster preparedness programs
  • Encourage citizen education in disaster preparedness and resilience
  • Encourage citizen participation in disaster preparedness activities
  • The Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee shall suggest achievable, low cost, short-term and long-term actions that the City and its residents may take to facilitate its goals.
  • The Committee will not hear, advise, or make recommendations on public safety procedure or personnel matters and shall limit its discussions to those areas listed above. Its focus shall be on tangible, practical, cost-effective actions that can be implemented at the local level.

Meetings

  • The five-member Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee typically meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the EOC room at Fire Station 1, 333 Johnson Street in Sausalito.
  • All meetings of the Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee are open to the public

Member Requirements

  • There are five at-large members
  • Members must be Sausalito residents
  • Members must be appointed by the City Council
  • The City Council encourages residents to apply to serve on the  Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee; if interested, please fill out an application form
  • The term length is three years, with a maximum of two terms
  • A member may continue to serve after her or his term expires, until a new member is appointed
  • Chris Gallagher serves on the committee as the representative of the Bay Model and the Army Corps of Engineers
  • The City of Sausalito representatives are Fire Chief Chris Tubbs, Fire Captain Doug Paterson, and Police Lieutenant Bill Fraass
