The Role of the Historic Landmarks Board

  • Review applications for exterior renovation of historic or noteworthy structures, historic sites and landmarks located throughout Sausalito
  • Promote preservation of historic sites, landmarks, documents, paintings and objects associated with the history of Sausalito
  • Recommend to the Planning Commission that certain historic sites, landmarks and districts be designated and/or acquired by the City
  • Advise the City Council on the acceptance of donations and/or acquisitions of items with historic value to the City
  • Advise the City Council on matters relating to the historic and cultural preservation of the City


  • The five-member Historic Landmarks Board typically meets once per month on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Room
  • If there is a project requiring joint review with the Planning Commission, a meeting may be held on the second monthly meeting date of the Planning Commission
  • All meetings of the Historic Landmarks Board are open to the public
  • Joint meetings with the Planning Commission meetings may be viewed live via webcast or as video recordings beginning on the day after a meeting takes place
  • Meeting times and agendas may be viewed on the Meetings and Agendas page for the Historic Landmarks Board


  • There are five at-large members of the Historic Landmarks Board 
  • Members must be Sausalito residents
  • Members must be appointed by the City Council
  • Members should have training, experience, or a demonstrated interest in historic preservation
  • The City Council encourages residents to apply to serve on the Historic Landmarks Board; if interested, please fill out an application form
  • The term length is two years, with a maximum of three terms
  • A member may continue to serve after her or his term expires, until a new member is appointed
