Council Approves 2018 Bicycle and Congestion Management Plan

Post Date:03/02/2018 3:10 PM
With another tourist bicycle season on the way, the Sausalito City Council approved a Bicycle and Congestion Management Plan for 2018 at its meeting on Tuesday, February 27. The overarching goal of the plan is to make downtown Sausalito a safer and more orderly place during the seasonal influx of bicyclists and pedestrians, most of whom are exploring our town while they wait for a ferry ride back to San Francisco.

The basic elements of the Bicycle and Congestion Management Plan include:
  • Ambassadors directing bicycles at the south gateway to Sausalito and at the intersection of Bridgeway and Princess Street
  • A paid parking lot for bicycles on Tracy Way
  • A bicycle return service that will take bicycles back to San Francisco by truck for a small fee
  • Improved queuing and online reservation services provided by the ferry companies

In approving the 2018 plan, the Council agreed to a contract with Sausalito Bike Return to provide ambassador, bicycle parking, and bicycle return services from March 23 to October 14. Sausalito Bike Return is a private company owned and operated by John and Lisa Scopazzi. In 2017, working under contract with the City, Sausalito Bike Return transported 5,698 bicycles from Sausalito to San Francisco.

Per the contract for 2018, Sausalito Bicycle Return will provide bicycle parking and return services on a daily basis. Ambassador services will be offered seven days a week during the busy summer months of June, July, and August; and three days a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) during the other months.

Although safety rather than revenue is the primary goal of the Bicycle and Congestion Management Plan, the contract with Sausalito Bicycle Return is structured such that the City of Sausalito anticipates receiving approximately $25,000 as its share of revenue from bicycle parking and return. The fee for bicycle parking in the Tracy Way lot is expected to be $3 per bike, with $12 as the charge for bicycle return to San Francisco.
