Sausalito and Sakaide Celebrate Thirty Years as Sister Cities

Post Date:07/06/2018 2:30 PM

This summer, Sausalito and Sakaide, Japan, are celebrating our 30th anniversary as sister cities. The relationship began in 1988, the same year that Sakaide opened the Seto Ōhashi Bridge, a series of eleven bridges spanning the Seto Inland Sea. During the planning stages for the Seto Ōhashi, engineers from Japan spent time in Sausalito studying the Golden Gate Bridge.

To mark the anniversary, Mayor Hiroshi Aya and a delegation from Sakaide will arrive in Sausalito on Thursday, July 26. A special ceremonial meeting of the City Council will be held on Friday, July 27 at 8:30 a.m. to welcome Mayor Aya and the delegation. Our visitors will also be the guests of honor at a Western-themed barbecue hosted by Sausalito Sister Cities at the Bay Model on Saturday, July 28. The event begins at 6:00 p.m., and tickets are $30.

The event on July 28 will also welcome thirteen exchange students from Sakaide who will be spending time in the homes of Marin high school students this summer. Sausalito and Sakaide alternate years that they send or receive a student delegation. Over thirty years, Sausalito and Sakaide have exchanged more than 550 American and Japanese high school students. The mission of the exchange program is to promote and expand cross-cultural relationships between our two cities and between the United States and Japan.
