City Council to Discuss Short-Term Rentals at October 9 Meeting

Post Date:10/05/2018 3:30 PM

The Sausalito City Council will revisit the issue of short-term rentals at its meeting on Tuesday, October 9. The issue was last considered on February 28, 2017, when the Council voted 3-2 to maintain the City's current prohibition on short-term rentals and address the issue as part of the General Plan Update process. A short-term rental is defined as the rental of a home, dwelling unit, or room or rooms in a dwelling unit for a period of less than thirty days.

Prior to the City Council decision in February 2017, four of the five members of a Short Term Rental Task Force appointed by the Council had recommended establishing a one or two-year pilot program to allow short-term rentals, subject to a list of regulations and restrictions.

At its meeting on October 9, the City Council will discuss whether to continue the current prohibition on short-term rentals in Sausalito – with or without enhanced code enforcement services – or consider a modified version of the pilot program proposed in 2017.

The staff report on short-term rentals for the October 9 meeting includes an overview of the Short Term Rental Task Force's recommendations, an update on code enforcement in Sausalito, a discussion of the revenue implications of permitting short-term rentals, an update on recent legislation enacted by Marin County regarding short-term rentals, and considerations provided by the Legislative Committee, a subcommittee of the City Council consisting of Mayor Joan Cox and Councilmember Jill Hoffman.

Any questions or comments about short-term rentals in Sausalito may be directed to Community Development Director Lilly Whalen at (415) 289-4133 or lwhalen@sausalito.gov. The short-term rentals item at the October 9 meeting of the City Council is expected to begin at approximately 9:00 p.m.
