Learn About the Mobile Shower Service Proposed for Sausalito

Post Date:10/05/2018 1:30 PM

In November, the Sausalito City Council will consider a six-month pilot program to offer mobile shower service in Sausalito on two days a week for approximately three hours each day. The shower service would be provided by Marin Mobile Care, an operation run by the Downtown Streets Team, a nonprofit organization that seeks to end homelessness through the dignity of work. There is currently only one public shower in Marin County, and it is located in San Rafael.

To familiarize local residents with the mobile shower service, Marin Mobile Care will have a mobile shower trailer on display on the afternoon of Thursday, October 11 at the four sites being considered for the service:
  • Marinship Park: 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
  • 300 Locust Parking Lot: 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.
  • 300 Turney Boat Ramp: 2:50 to 3:25 p.m.
  • Municipal Parking Lot 4: 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Marin Mobile Care's shower program has two primary goals. The first is to offer a basic need, a shower, which lends itself to people rediscovering dignity and washing away stigma. A shower alleviates some of the day-to-day stresses of being in "survival mode" and often allows people to focus on their next step.

The second goal of the shower program is to connect individuals to the resources they need, such as a bed for the night, medical care, mental health counseling, food resources, and employment and housing opportunities. Staff are on site at the mobile showers to help guests connect with these resources, look up bus routes, or research solutions to meet specific needs.

In addition to providing the opportunity to view the mobile showers trailer on October 11, the City of Sausalito will host a public workshop on Tuesday, October 23 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. The workshop will be facilitated by staff from the Downtown Streets Team and the Sausalito Police Department. The workshop will provide an overview of the Marin Mobile Care shower program and give the public an opportunity to ask questions. A mobile shower trailer will be on display in the City Hall parking lot before and after the workshop.

Any questions or comments about mobile showers may be directed to Lieutenant Bill Fraass at bfraass@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4170.
