City Council Approves Pilot Program for Mobile Showers

Post Date:11/16/2018 3:30 PM

The City Council has approved a 6-month pilot program to offer a mobile shower service to Sausalito's homeless and waterfront communities. The approval on November 13 was by unanimous vote of the Council's five members. In approving the pilot program, the Council directed City staff to do the following:
  • Work with the Downtown Streets Team to enter into an agreement with Marin Mobile Care to develop and operate a 6-month mobile shower pilot program at Marinship Park and the City Hall parking lot
  • Consider appropriate times for the mobile shower service, generally in the morning
  • Consider adding an evening time, if warranted
  • Conduct outreach to neighboring businesses, faith-based organizations, and potential customers to maximize the number of participants, while minimizing any negative impacts to neighbors
  • Return to the City Council in March 2019 with a status report on the program
The Sausalito Police Department plans to begin the mobile shower service during the week of December 3, 2018. At the start, showers will be available two weekday mornings per week at Marinship Park. At some later date, the Police Department and Marin Mobile Care may experiment with an evening shower service at the City Hall parking lot. Once the program is underway, Marin Mobile Care will track statistics like the number of shower users and referrals to other services.

Before the vote was taken, the Council received presentations from Karen Strolia of Marin Mobile Care, Ashley Hart McIntyre of Marin Health and Human Services, and Lieutenant Bill Fraass of the Sausalito Police Department. The presentation from Lieutenant Fraass emphasized outreach efforts to Sausalito residents and businesses – including surveys conducted on Nextdoor and the City's Open City Hall website – and the pros and cons of various prospective locations for the mobile showers.

The pilot program will be funded via the City of Sausalito's $11,540 annual contribution to a Community Homeless Fund created by the Marin County Council of Mayors and Councilmembers. Any questions about the mobile showers program may be directed to Lieutenant Bill Fraass of the Sausalito Police Department at (415) 289-4170 or bfraass@sausalito.gov.
