City Council Elects New Mayor and Vice Mayor

Post Date:12/14/2018 4:00 PM

At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 11, the Council elected Councilmember Joe Burns to serve as mayor in 2019 and Councilmember Susan Cleveland-Knowles to serve as vice mayor. The selection of a mayor and vice mayor is an annual event in Sausalito, with the holder of each position serving a one-year term. Mayor Burns served as vice mayor during the past year and succeeds outgoing Mayor Joan Cox.

The role of mayor is essential to Sausalito government. The mayor presides over meetings of the City Council, leads a subcommittee that sets meeting agendas for the Council, makes special proclamations, creates task forces, and makes appointments to county and regional commissions. The mayor also represents Sausalito to the press and at ceremonial occasions here and abroad.

The next regular meeting of the Sausalito City Council will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
