Remembering Gene Hiller

Post Date:01/11/2019 2:20 PM

Mayor Joe Burns began the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 8 with a special proclamation in honor of Gene Hiller, whose Gene Hiller Menswear has been a fixture in downtown Sausalito for almost 60 years. Gene passed away in December 2018 at the age of 90.

Gene Hiller Menswear was founded on Geary Street in San Francisco in 1953, then moved to Sausalito at 690 Bridgeway in 1960. In 1993, the business moved again, this time across the street to today's location at 729/731 Bridgeway, a building that served as Sausalito City Hall until the early 1970s.

In his proclamation, Mayor Burns noted that in the 65 years since its founding, "Gene Hiller Menswear remained dedicated to their worldwide customers by offering a combination of tradition and innovation... and yet all the while, Gene never forgot our small town... staying involved in community activities and giving to much-needed charities."

Gene is survived by his wife Tove, his stepdaughter Terri, and his twin grandsons Angel and Alex.
