Historical Society Breaks Ground on New Ice House Plaza

Post Date:01/18/2019 3:30 PM

On Friday, January 18, representatives from the Sausalito Historical Society, the Sausalito Foundation, and other local organizations were joined by members of the City Council for a ceremonial groundbreaking of the new Ice House Plaza in downtown Sausalito. The new plaza will front Bridgeway on public land adjacent to the Ice House Museum and Visitor Center at the corner of Bay Street and Bridgeway.

The plaza design was created by SWA Group of Sausalito and consists of wooden benches, concrete seating walls, native plants, a wooden platform for making presentations to local schoolchildren, and a historical timeline that follows the tracks of a rail line outlined in tile. The plaza will also feature a bronze statue of cartoonist and longtime Sausalito Historical Society volunteer Phil Frank. Following Phil's death in 2007, Bea Seidler of the Sausalito Foundation took up the cause of building the plaza that Phil had always envisioned for the site.

Plans for the Ice House Plaza were approved by the Planning Commission and the Historic Landmarks Board in February 2017. In May 2017, the City Council approved the placement of the Phil Frank statue.

Construction of the new plaza is expected to be completed by May 2019. Any questions about the project may be directed to the Sausalito Historical Society at (415) 289-4117 or info@sausalitohistoricalsociety.org. The Ice House Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
