A Busy Week for Mother Nature

Post Date:01/25/2019 3:30 PM

Public works and public safety personnel were kept busy this week by a series of minor natural disasters that provided a reminder of Sausalito's somewhat precarious position between its steep hillsides and the waters of Richardson Bay.
  • On Saturday, January 19, a minor landslide took place on National Park Service land in the vicinity of 447 Sausalito Boulevard. The slide consisted primarily of rock and did not block the roadway or cause any property damage.
  • On Sunday, January 20, seasonal king tides caused heavy flooding on Gate 5 Road. The flooding was deep enough to create a hazard for small vehicles.
  • On Monday, January 21, a large Italian stone pine toppled over, causing minor damage to an adjacent home. The tree was located on City land near the top of the North Street Steps at the intersection of North and Josephine streets
No injuries were reported as a result of these incidents, and in each case public safety and public works staff secured the area to prevent any additional harm.

If you witness a natural disaster and do not see public safety personnel on site, please evacuate to a safe place and report the incident by calling 9-1-1. Smaller incidents like fallen branches or blocked storm drains may be reported via the Public Works Department's maintenance request form. Any questions about disaster preparedness in Sausalito may be directed to Lieutenant Bill Fraass at bfraass@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4170.
