Renovations to the
tennis courts at
MLK Park will begin soon and are expected to be completed by July 2019. The scope of the project includes the repair and resurfacing of the tennis courts, along with the creation of a new van-accessible parking stall on Coloma Street and a new accessible path of travel to the courts. Construction will be performed by Maggiora & Ghilotti, Inc. of San Rafael.
Preparation work will begin during the week of March 18 and includes the removal of eight pine trees on the eastern perimeter of the tennis courts. The pines are being removed because a professional arborist has determined that tree roots extending below the courts cannot be safely removed without dangerously destabilizing the trees. The health condition of the trees is fair to poor, with some of the trees infected with pine pitch canker (
Fusarium circinatum) and others infested with red turpentine beetles. The
Parks and Recreation Commission is currently working with residents,
Sausalito Beautiful, and other local organizations to develop a tree planting program throughout Sausalito, including MLK Park.
Funding for improvements to the MLK tennis courts comes from the
2016 Certificates of Participation. Any questions about the project may be directed to Senior Civil Engineer Andrew Davidson at adavidson@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4180.
