Library Summer Reading Program for Kids Now Underway

Post Date:05/31/2019 3:20 PM

School is almost out, which means it's time for the Sausalito Public Library's annual Summer Reading Program.

At the center of the Summer Reading Program is the annual Summer Reading Challenge, which began on May 29. This year, there is a reading challenge for kids 11 and under, and a separate challenge for kids 12-14 years old. Reading challenge participants get a prize when they sign up at the Sausalito Library and then another prize when they've read for 12 hours. They also get a prize for completing four activities: going for a hike, coming to the library, painting or drawing a picture, and sending a letter or postcard.

Middle schoolers also get a prize for signing up for the reading challenge and then after 12 hours of reading, and they get another prize after reading for 20, 30, and 40 hours. They also have a Bingo board with challenges like reading a book published before 1970, watching a movie based on a book, and going for a hike.

This year's Summer Reading Program also features seven weeks of programs and events for kids, including magicians, book clubs, story times, cupcake decorating, aliens, movies, and more. Programs and events take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from June 10 through July 26.

The Summer Reading Program is about more than fun. Researchers have found that kids lose reading skills during the summer months when they are out of school. The challenges, prizes, events, and performances create a dynamic relationship between the library and the children of Sausalito. A magic show may help to bring kids into the library, but our real goal is to send them home with an armload of books and a warm feeling about the library and lifelong learning.

The library's website has all the details about Summer Reading Program events, and the program will be the focus of the biweekly Sausalito Library children's services e-newsletter for the next two months.
