Van Meters Named Grand Marshals of 4th of July Parade

Post Date:06/07/2019 3:15 PM

Longtime Sausalito residents Shelby and Peter Van Meter have been named the grand marshals of Sausalito's annual 4th of July Parade. Shelby and Peter will be riding in a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado near the head of this year's parade, which will begin at the corner of Second and Main streets at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.

Shelby Van Meter is the founder of Sausalito Beautiful, a non-profit organization responsible for the recent improvements to the Bridgeway medians and many other beautification projects around town. Shelby has served as a board member for numerous local organizations. She also helped to establish Sausalito's first emergency preparedness program and a program to provide food, dental care, and clothing to locals in need.

Peter Van Meter served on the City Council in the 1970s and has been active on many City of Sausalito boards, commissions, and committees over the years, including the Planning Commission, the Business Advisory Committee, and the Imagine Sausalito Committee. He currently serves on the General Plan Advisory Committee. Peter also produced the Sausalito Art Festival from 1978 to 1982.

In addition to the parade, this year's 4th of July festivities will include an afternoon picnic with games and live music in Robin Sweeny Park, followed by evening music and fireworks at Gabrielson Park in downtown Sausalito.
