Fire Breaks Planned for Cypress Ridge Open Space

Post Date:06/07/2019 3:10 PM

As we approach the wildfire season, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District is gearing up for vegetation management projects in Sausalito. The first project involves fuel reduction in the Cypress Ridge Open Space. The work is being funded with proceeds from Measure U, a $200 parcel tax approved by voters in November 2018 to improve local emergency services.

Fuel reduction at Cypress Ridge will take place in two phases. The first phase will begin during the week of June 10 (once the weather cools down) and includes cutting annual grasses and scotch broom to create a 100' fire break between the open space and surrounding homes. During this phase, crews will also cut all tree branches that are less than 10' above the ground and reduce other vegetation around trees.

The second phase at Cypress Ridge will begin during the summer months and consists of more weed cutting and branch removal, along with the removal of dead and dying trees. Healthy eucalyptus trees will also be evaluated for removal due to their high flammability.

Questions about the project at Cypress Ridge may be directed to Battalion Chief Scott Barnes at (415) 389-4139 or sbarnes@smfd.org. Vegetation management projects on neighborhood streets in Sausalito will begin in July.
