City Council Approves 2019-20 Budget, Sewer Rate Increase

Post Date:06/21/2019 2:55 PM

In separate public hearings at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 18, the Council voted to approve a new five-year rate schedule for sewer service and a fiscal year 2019-20 budget. Both items passed with a 4-1 vote.

The Council voted in favor of an increase to the City's sewer rates after receiving only five protests from residents and parcel owners. In compliance with state law, 1,751 protests (50% of property owners + 1) were required to remove the item from consideration by the Council. As approved, the City's sewer rates will rise by an aggregate of 4% per year over the next five years, with new rates going into effect on July 1, 2019. Funds generated by the higher rates will make it possible for the City to make capital improvements that are necessary to continue to maintain compliance with Clean Water Act requirements.

The final budget approved for fiscal year 2019-20 includes the following elements:
  • General fund operating revenues of $19,023,674
  • General fund operating expenditures of $18,035,486
  • Capital expenditures of $5,436,877
  • Undesignated general fund balance of $1,569,363
The capital expenditures budget includes 30 capital improvement projects planned for the upcoming year.

The fiscal year 2019-20 budget is the second year of a two-year budget cycle for the City of Sausalito. The next two-year budget cycle will begin on July 1, 2020 and cover fiscal years 2020-21 and 2021-22.
