Faulty Ground Wire Caused Fireworks Delay on July 4

Post Date:07/12/2019 3:10 PM
A faulty ground wire was behind the delayed start of this year's 4th of July fireworks, according to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Langford. The fireworks were scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m., but were delayed 45 minutes while repairs were underway.

Langford explains, "Each firework has two wires going to it, one being a firing wire controlled by the operator, the other a ground wire which travels around the firing platform to every firework. The crew from Pyro Spectacular identified the defective ground wire prior to the start of the show and had to rewire all 804 fireworks (over 500 lbs.) while on a moving barge in the dark."

Sausalito's annual 4th of July fireworks are funded by donations, not tax dollars. The Parks and Recreation Department is still short of funds this year, so please donate if you enjoyed the fireworks and would like to keep the tradition going. Donations are collected at the Parks and Recreation office at City Hall and at Jazz and Blues by the Bay concerts — or you can donate online at sausalito4thofjuly.com.
