Five New Firefighters for Southern Marin Fire

Post Date:07/19/2019 3:15 PM

New firefighters Aaron Maddox, Zac Cordisco, Stephen Ramirez, Shane Kunst, and Jason Cardwell have joined the staff of the Southern Marin Fire Protection District, the fire agency responsible for Sausalito and surrounding communities. All five are recent graduates of the Marin County Regional Fire Academy, an intensive 11-week program based on the California State Fire Marshal Firefighter II curriculum. This year's academy graduated 19 recruits.

In order to participate in the Marin County Regional Fire Academy, recruits must be graduates of a Firefighter 1 academy and possess either an Emergency Medical Technician 1 or Paramedic license. Approximately 50% of this year's recruits were licensed paramedics, including two of the new members of Southern Marin Fire.

The district's new firefighters and firefighter paramedics replace recently retired and soon-to-retire firefighters on the district staff. Now that they have graduated from the Marin County Regional Fire Academy, the new firefighters will continue their intense training on a probationary basis for a total of 18 months.

Any questions about the Marin County Regional Fire Academy or the training necessary to become a firefighter may be directed to Battalion Chief Matthew Barnes at (415) 380-1104 or mbarnes@smfd.org.
