Remembering Norm Wohlschlaeger (1932-2019)
Norman Clifford Wohlschlaeger passed away on July 20, 2019. A Sausalito resident for more than 50 years, Norm served as the City's public works director from 1963 until his retirement in 1989.
In an interview in 2016, Norm reflected, "There was not one traffic light when I got to Sausalito. When the first one was installed at the intersection of Bridgeway and Harbor Drive, they named it Norm's Light."
Norm was born in Chester, Illinois, in 1932. He was a football star at Chester High School and served as a member of the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1950s. While a student at Santa Rosa Junior College, he chose the perfect night to attend a barn dance and met Gloria, the love of his life. Norm was later accepted to San Jose State University, and before receiving his bachelor's degree in civil engineering, he and Gloria were married on September 8, 1957.
Norm is survived by his wife Gloria, children Pam and Dave, and grandchildren Marisa, Luke, Shane, and Gina. A memorial reception will be held at the Spinnaker Restaurant from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15. A presentation will take place at 3:30 p.m.
