Openings on Boards and Commissions

Post Date:11/08/2019 2:30 PM

The City of Sausalito's boards and commissions are an essential part of our local government. The local resident volunteers who serve as commissioners provide critical advice to the City Council and make important front-line decisions in Sausalito, including those related to historic preservation, disaster preparedness, and new home construction. There are currently openings on five of the City's boards and commissions. If you have ever considered contributing to the effective governance of Sausalito, this is a great time to get involved.

Commissioners are appointed by the City Council after an interview process to assess the qualifications of applicants. New commissioners typically serve a three-year term. Two terms may be served before a commissioner "terms out." Alternates may participate in the absence of regular members and fill vacancies when a regular member is termed out or resigns. Most of Sausalito's boards and commissions meet once per month in the evening.

These are the City of Sausalito boards and commissions that currently have openings:
  • Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee. The seven members of the Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee advise the City Council on matters of policy related to disaster preparedness and help to build a strong connection between the police department and the community. There are two current vacancies on the committee. Please submit an application by November 22.
  • Historic Preservation Commission. Members of the Historic Preservation Commission review applications for exterior renovation of historic or noteworthy structures and sites located throughout Sausalito. In addition, the five-member commission advises the City Council on matters related to historic and cultural preservation. If interested, please submit an application by December 15.
  • Library Board of Trustees. The five members of the Sausalito Library Board of Trustees review the administration of library operations, establish library policies, and make recommendations to the city librarian. There is currently an opening for an alternate. If interested, please submit an application by November 22.
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee. The seven members of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee review the City's Bicycle Master Plan and provide recommendations to the City Council. There are two current vacancies. If interested, please submit an application by November 22.
  • Planning Commission. The five members of the Planning Commission review applications for design review and land use entitlements as set forth in planning and zoning laws of the City and state. If interested, please submit an application by November 22.
If you have any questions about joining a City of Sausalito board or commission, please contact Administrative Aide Serge Avila at (415) 289-4134 or savila@sausalito.gov. In addition to those listed above, there are a number of other boards and commissions and special committees in Sausalito that regularly seek new members.
