Local Firefighters Battle October Wildfires

Post Date:11/15/2019 2:05 PM

Thirteen firefighters and three fire engines from the Southern Marin Fire Protection District were dispatched to Sonoma and Ventura counties during the wildfires that broke out in late October 2019.

The Kincade Fire in Sonoma County was the most significant event, burning 77,758 acres and destroying more than 100 homes before it was fully contained on November 6. During the fire, personnel from Southern Marin Fire were assigned tasks that included protecting structures during extreme fire conditions, controlling the perimeter at the head of the fire, and supporting burn operations. At one point, firefighters did not come off the fire line for over 48 hours.

The California Assistance Agreement and the California Master Mutual Aid System provide the framework for local, regional, state, and federal emergency service providers to immediately offer assistance to communities that are impacted by disasters like the Kincade Fire. One of the many benefits of Southern Marin Fire's participation in both of these systems is that if a major event occurs in our area, thousands of resources will immediately respond to our call for help.
