License Plate Cameras Lead to Arrest for Stolen Vehicle

Post Date:05/19/2020 1:00 PM
At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, the Sausalito Police Department received an alert from its license plate recognition cameras of a stolen vehicle entering Sausalito from Monte Mar Avenue. The vehicle, a 1982 Toyota pickup truck, had been stolen from San Rafael the same day.

Officers immediately responded and conducted a comprehensive search of the area. At approximately 3:10 p.m., they located the Toyota in the area of Currey Avenue and Glen Drive.

The officers affected a stop on the Toyota and detained the driver, Diego Natividad Hernandez (33-year-old transient out of San Rafael), who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that Hernandez was in possession of burglary tools and on probation in Marin County for resisting an officer, assault, and vandalism. Hernandez was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of burglary tools.

The goal of the license plate recognition camera program is to increase public safety by utilizing technology to alert law enforcement to wanted vehicles, enhance post-crime investigative abilities, and deter crime by increasing the likelihood of suspect identification.

Any questions about the arrest or the license plate recognition camera program may be directed to Lt. Bill Fraass at bfraass@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4170.
