Dirt Stockpile Adjacent to Dunphy Park Slated for Removal

Post Date:09/11/2020 8:35 PM

A project to remove a large stockpile of soil excavated during the Dunphy Park Improvement Project is currently out for bid by contractors. The stockpile of approximately 3,300 cubic yards of dirt is located on City property to the south of current park boundaries and covered with plastic sheeting.

The soil was removed and stockpiled based on elevated levels of lead associated with the site's use as a municipal burn dump from the 1930s to the 1950s, when lead paints were common. The soil did not pose a hazard until the surface layer of dirt was removed as part of the improvement project. New soil was brought in to a depth of two feet to replace the excavated soil.

Bids on a contract to haul away the stockpiled soil are expected to be opened on September 23. The estimated cost for the removal is $250,000. However, the estimated cost is predicated on finding a dump site that is within a reasonable distance of Sausalito. Hauling the material to a more remote location may be more costly. If the City receives a reasonable bid for the work, the stockpile should be removed by December 2020.
