Dunphy Park Reopening Celebrated with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Post Date:09/25/2020 7:25 PM
A small and socially-distanced ceremony was held in Dunphy Park on Saturday, September 19 to celebrate the park's reopening for public use.

The event was kicked off by Mayor Susan Cleveland-Knowles after a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. In her opening remarks, the mayor noted, "Today is the official welcome to our community to come down and enjoy the park. We can't all do it together, but everyone can come down with their families and their four-legged friends and find a space to socially distance and enjoy all of the great new things that the park has."

Mayor Cleveland-Knowles added, "We're really excited with all the visible results of the park, but what you can't see is a whole bunch of new improvements like underground drainage, irrigation, and enhanced sanitary for the Cruising Club and the marina.... It was a complex project and our staff really stood up and met that task."

The mayor was followed by Councilmember Joe Burns, who acknowledged a long list of people and organizations that made the project possible, including Galilee Harbor, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Friends of Dunphy Park, City staff past and present, the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, and state and federal environmental agencies.

Local architect Jacques Ullman spoke next. One of the founders of the Friends of Dunphy Park, Jacques worked with landscape architect Paul Leffingwell to developed the master plan for park improvements that was the basis for the recently completed project.

Jacques remarked, "Twenty years ago there was a project that was proposed for the peninsula by Sausalito Marina, and we potentially had a complex of office studios and high development and a much larger marina. In reaction to that we formed Friends of Dunphy Park... to preserve this peninsula from development and combine that with the redesign of Dunphy Park."

The brief event concluded with remarks from Vice Mayor Ray Withy, who talked about the complex task of assembling funding for the project and expressed his hope that the entire community would be able to gather together in the park for the 4th of July celebrations in 2021.

Hours at Dunphy Park are sunrise to sunset. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing when in the proximity of those outside of your household.

The volleyball court should be ready for use next week once new sand has been deployed. Sand will also be added to the shoreline area so that kids have a place to play by the water.
