The City Council at a special meeting on Friday, February 5, voted 4-1 to approve two resolutions regarding homelessness in Sausalito and the tent encampment at Dunphy Park. The vote came after a 3.5-hour meeting during which nearly 40 speakers gave public comment.
The resolutions, as recommended by City staff:
- Express the City's commitment to work with regional and local partners to explore every opportunity to provide shelter and care to those without a home and to treat all individuals experiencing homelessness with compassion and dignity.
- Close certain City property, except for a designated portion of Marinship Park, to camping and storage of personal property and adopt standard operating procedures for cleaning and clearing encampments.
The motion approved by the Council also directs City staff to withhold posting the notice of the closure of Dunphy Park to overnight camping until Tuesday, February 9, and delays implementing the decampment of Dunphy Park until reasonable storage facilities can be made available to those overnight campers utilizing Marinship Park.
Those voting in favor of the motion were Mayor Jill James Hoffman, Vice Mayor Janelle Kellman, Councilmember Susan Cleveland-Knowles, and Councilmember Ian Sobieski. Councilmember Melissa Blaustein voted against the motion.
The staff report and the full text of the proposed resolutions can be found on the meeting agenda. A video recording of the meeting should be available on the City Council Meetings and Agendas page on Saturday, February 6. Please note that, due to technical difficulties, the final few minutes of the meeting will have to be restored from a backup recording and will not be available until early next week.
