On-Street Dining on Caledonia Street to Return for 2021

Post Date:03/12/2021 5:50 PM

On-street dining will return to the Caledonia Street block between Pine and Johnson streets for 2021 thanks to a unanimous decision by the City Council on March 9.

The decision by the Council renews a pilot program that was in effect from June to November 2020 to help the struggling restaurants on the block and provide safe spaces for outdoor diners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the renewed program, Caledonia Street between Pine and Johnson streets will close from Thursday afternoon until early Monday morning beginning March 18, 2021. A portion of the street will remain accessible to emergency vehicles.

The four restaurants participating in the pilot program are Sartaj, San Drino, F3, and Osteria Divino. A separate action by the City's Community Development Department in December 2020 allows the restaurants on the block to create semi-permanent "parklets" in the parking spaces fronting their establishments along Caledonia Street. When on-street dining is in effect, the planter boxes from the parklets will be used as dividers between the restaurants.

In making its decision on March 9, the City Council deferred a request from the participating restaurants to close the block seven days a week, 24 hours a day, during the outdoor dining season. If that request is to return to the Council, it will first be reviewed by the City's Planning Commission for a recommendation.

Any questions or concerns about outdoor dining on Caledonia Street may be directed to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Langford at mlangford@sausalito.gov.
