Marinship Park

The City of Sausalito this week expanded the area of Marinship Park that is designated as a transitional overnight sleeping area for persons who have no option to sleep indoors.

The additional space immediately provides an alternate sleeping area for persons utilizing the encampment. The space has been made available in response to concerns raised by encampment members regarding the condition of the encampment following the recent storms.

The expanded area includes half of the Marinship Park public parking lot and all of an adjoining concrete pad. The designation immediately provides an alternative sleeping area for persons utilizing the Marinship Park encampment.

The City has designated the current expansion as "temporary" to immediately provide an alternate sleeping area for persons at the Marinship encampment and to allow the City to convert the Marinship Park tennis courts to a transitional overnight sleeping area. Once the tennis courts have been converted, the parking lot and concrete pad will return to their normal and customary use. It is also the City's intention to close and clear the existing encampment site on the grassy area of Marinship Park in order to conduct further analysis and investigation of concerns raised by members of the encampment.

Earlier this week, tents were illegally set up at Dunphy Park and at Robin Sweeny Park. The City has designated one transitional overall sleeping area, Marinship Park, for persons who have no other options for sleeping indoors. As such, the City has removed the tents at Dunphy Park and will be removing the tents at Robin Sweeny Park.

Importantly, the City continues to promote, coordinate, and offer to place persons needing overnight shelter in seven beds that it has secured at the New Beginnings Center in Novato, four beds for men and three beds for women. Also, the City is partnering with Marin County officials on a grant proposal to fund an innovative program to accelerate housing solutions for those without shelter.
