City Sends Letter to Marin County Requesting Funds for Encampment

Post Date:05/06/2022 3:40 PM

The City of Sausalito has sent a letter to Marin County Administrator Matthew Hymel and Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters requesting $1.5 million to fund a social worker, security, and emergency housing vouchers for the homeless residents of the tent encampment in Marinship Park. To date, Sausalito has spent over $1.5 million maintaining and securing the encampment.

An initial draft of the letter was prepared by Mayor Janelle Kellman and Vice Mayor Melissa Blaustein in response to a recent report by the Marin IJ that Marin County "expects to end the current fiscal year with a $51.1 million general fund surplus."

The City Council held a special meeting on Wednesday, May 4 to consider whether to send the letter and if any changes should be made to the draft version. At the end of the 30-minute meeting, a motion to send a revised version of the letter was approved by a vote of 4-0. Councilmember Susan Cleveland-Knowles was unable to attend the meeting.
