Bicycle Thieves Targeting Residential Garages in Marin

Post Date:01/20/2023 1:35 PM
series of thefts from locked residential garages has police agencies in Central and Southern Marin sounding the alarm. Three such thefts have taken place in Sausalito over the past month.

The thieves are primarily targeting high-end bicycles stored in attached and unattached garages with glass windows, though other items have been taken in instances where there were no bicycles to steal.

The method of operation of the thieves is to break a small hole in the window glass of the garage, then use an improvised tool to open the garage door with the emergency pull cord.

Thefts are typically taking place between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 a.m.

Recommended steps for deterring thefts from residential garages include the following:
  • Report suspicious vehicles and their license plate numbers to the police.
  • Block garage door windows to prevent thieves from seeing what is inside.
  • Reinforce garage door glass with an added layer of plexiglass.
  • Remove or secure the emergency release handle.
  • Install a deadbolt to lock the garage door overnight.
  • Install home surveillance cameras and motion-activated flood lights.

Any questions about bicycle theft or theft prevention may be directed to the Sausalito Police Department at (415) 289-4170.
