With its
new concrete platform poured and ready, Sausalito's iconic
sea lion sculpture will soon make a triumphant return to our southern waterfront.
The new platform was constructed during low tides on June 24 and 25 by a team from Millsap Degnan & Associates led by Douglas Degnan. Among other features, it is reinforced with fiberglass rebar to reduce corrosion.
The replacement platform is approximately 12 inches taller than the previous platform, which will help it adapt to the rise in sea levels projected for the coming decades.
The one-ton sculpture will be crane-lifted to its new home and bolted down at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3. Spectators are welcome. For your safety, please observe any closures to the roadway, sidewalk, or shoreline path while work is underway.
Funds for the sculpture's restoration, the design and fabrication of the new platform, and ongoing maintenance were raised by the
Sausalito Foundation.
The sculpture is a shiny bronze in its restored state. In the coming years, it will slowly return to its familiar green patina.
