Sausalito Parks and Recreation and the
Public Works Department have installed a new amenity at
Gabrielson Park on the downtown waterfront: a concrete table for two with an inlaid chess board that can also be used for checkers or any game using an 8x8 grid.
The new outdoor table was donated in honor of longtime Sausalito resident
Marc Bishop Holland by Phillip and Ashley Torretto through the City's
Memorial Bench Program. Bishop was an avid chess player who passed away in 2023 at the age of 66.
The chess table is located at the east end of the park adjacent to the shoreline path. Preference for using the table should be given to people who are actively playing.
Parks and Recreation is currently developing ideas for ways to loan out chess and checkers pieces. For now, players will need to provide their own game pieces. It is often windy at Gabrielson Park, so weighted pieces are a better choice than those made of hollow plastic.
Any questions about the new chess table at Gabrielson Park can be directed to recreation@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4152.
