The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released Sausalito from a 2008 administrative order that required the City to reduce the volume and frequency of sewage spills and improve its ability to prevent future spills. As a result of the order, for the past 16 years, the City has provided the EPA with quarterly and annual reports documenting its efforts.

Based on the effectiveness of those efforts, the EPA has, at the request of the City, terminated the order as of November 25, 2024. In its termination letter, the agency noted that Sausalito has complied with each requirement of the order, while adding that termination does not absolve the City of its ongoing obligation to comply with the Clean Water Act and other relevant statutes.
