At its meeting on December 9, the
Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee, by 3-0 vote, recommended that the City Council approve a plan to add
bike lanes and crosswalks to the segment of Bridgeway between Princess and Richardson streets.
The plan was developed by the transportation consulting firm
Parametrix as part of a City-commissioned study of
bicyclist and pedestrian safety on that section of Bridgeway. Funding for the $67,000 study came via a grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
The plan recommended by Parametrix and endorsed by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee calls for the removal of the center turn lane, the addition of 6' bike lanes in each direction, curbside management to support delivery vehicles within the parking lane, and installation of new crosswalks at the Trident Restaurant and Golden Gate Market.
In the motion endorsing the Parametrix plan, committee members added the recommendations that the curbside management plan be refined "to ensure that it's tailored to meet the needs of local business, residents, and first responders" and that additional crosswalks be considered for pedestrian safety.
A
video recording of the December 9 meeting, which included a significant amount of public comment, is available on the City website. Supporting documents and written public comment can be found on the
meeting agenda.
The City Council is expected to consider the topic at a meeting in January 2025. When available, details will be published in Currents.
