Council Elects Mayor and Vice Mayor for 2025

Post Date:12/20/2024 1:50 PM

At its meeting on December 17, the City Council elected Joan Cox to serve as mayor in 2025 and Steven Woodside to serve as vice mayor.

Councilmember Cox served as vice mayor during Ian Sobieski's term as mayor in 2024. Woodside is newly elected to the Council.

Sausalito is a general law city under the California Government Code, and the selection of a mayor and vice mayor is the responsibility of the City Council. By tradition, the five-member Council elects a mayor and vice mayor by majority vote on an annual basis.

Sausalito's mayor and vice mayor have the same voting power as the other members of the City Council.

Responsibilities of the mayor include presiding over Council meetings, acting as a spokesperson for the City, and working with the vice mayor and city manager to set the agendas of forthcoming meetings. The vice mayor assumes the responsibilities of mayor when the mayor is unavailable.

Mayor Cox will preside over the next regular meeting of the City Council on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. She previously served as mayor in 2018.
