Important News from Shoreline Adaptation Workshop

Post Date:01/31/2025 3:50 PM

On Saturday, January 25, the City hosted the second of three planned community workshops on strategies for shoreline adaptation as Sausalito confronts a projected sea level rise of 10 inches by 2050 and 37 inches by 2100.

One hundred and twenty people attended the event at the Bay Model Visitor Center in the Marinship, which consisted of a 40-minute presentation by City consultant WRT Design, followed by 45 minutes of breakout sessions to collect feedback.

Although the event was not recorded, the presentation slides and Draft Vulnerability Summary provide a detailed overview of the material that was covered.

The presentation focused on the impact of sea level rise scenarios on waterfront neighborhoods in Sausalito and various approaches to mitigating or eliminating the threat of inundation based on community feedback and need.

The good news is that successful adaptation strategies that have already been deployed around the world are available to Sausalito. The bad news, albeit not specifically referenced in the material prepared for the workshop, is that such strategies could end up costing billions of dollars to implement.

The City Council is expected to receive a report on the workshop and the feedback received from attendees at an upcoming meeting. The third and final workshop is scheduled for summer 2025.

WRT Design will also review short- and long-term adaptation options for the Bridgeway Safety Improvement Project: Princess Street to Richardson Street at a special meeting of the Sustainability Commission on February 13.

Any questions or comments about shoreline adaptation in Sausalito can be directed to Resiliency and Sustainability Manager Catie Thow Garcia at cthowgarcia@sausalito.gov.
