Last week, we asked you for photos that capture Sausalito's unique beauty and magic. Resident Dieter Rapp sent in a photo that he took on Labor Day Weekend in 1984 of Sausalito's famous sea lion statue. The sculpture was created by resident Al Sybrian in the 1950's and recast in bronze in the 1960s to help it survive the elements. The nearly 2,000-pound sculpture was knocked into the water after a powerful storm in 2023, but was restored and returned home to its perch on Sausalito's southern waterfront in 2024. Learn more about the rich history behind the iconic sculpture on Sausalito Historical Society's website. Thank you so much, Dieter, for sharing this photo with us!
Do you have photos of Sausalito from the past? We'd love to see your photographs and hear the stories behind them. Send photos directly to currents@sausalito.gov, and confirm in your email that we have permission to use your photo and name for credit.
