On Tuesday, July 29, a Tsunami Advisory went into effect for coastal areas of California, including Sausalito, West Marin and the Bay coastline. The tsunami sent waves into Russia, Japan and Hawaii after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 80 miles southeast of Russia.
Upon notification of the July 2025 tsunami watch, Sausalito Police Department (SPD) coordinated closely with Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD), Mill Valley Police, and Marin County Office of Emergency Management (OEM). After attending briefings from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and California Office of Emergency Services, it was determined there was no immediate threat. Emergency alerts were coordinated through County Office of Emergency Management to ensure accurate, timely, and consistent public messaging. Additional information was also posted on the SPD's social media accounts.
Throughout the event, SPD staff actively monitored the Marin County Emergency Portal for real-time updates and encouraged the community to do the same. Calling SPD or Fire for general information during these events (unless it is an emergency) places an unnecessary burden on emergency response resources. We respectfully ask community members to avoid doing so.
