Marin City to Unveil Historical Legacy Banners Honoring Black Shipyard Workers

Post Date:08/08/2025 1:00 PM

On August 13, the Marin City Historical and Preservation Society and Performing Stars will host a community-wide unveiling ceremony of the Marin City Historical Legacy Banners, celebrating the essential contributions of Black Marinship workers and their descendants. The event marks the 83rd anniversary of August 13, 1942, when the first African American families arrived in Marin City’s wartime housing during World War II. This day symbolizes resilience, migration, and the forging of community under historic circumstances.

The unveiling will feature Legacy Banners designed by Bay Area graphic artist James Shields, archival photographs, historical quotes, and visual storytelling. The program also includes a guided banner walk, a 1945 Greyhound bus from the Pacific Bus Museum, a WWII military Jeep once owned by the late Joe Garbarino, and interviews with descendants of Marinship workers.

“These banners are more than images — they’re testimonies to the families who built this community with grit, dignity, and love,” said Felecia Gaston, Founder of Performing Stars and the Marin City Historical and Preservation Society. “By inviting descendants to return and reflect, we ensure this legacy remains visible, vital, and never forgotten.”

The event will take place from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Marin City, on Donahue Street near the main bus stop. This event is free and open to the public.
