In a rapidly changing emergency, staying informed can save lives. Southern Marin Fire District recommends signing up for multiple alert systems so you never miss critical information.
Alert Systems:
- AlertMarin: Get urgent notifications about evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, and other emergencies. Register up to five phone numbers at AlertMarin.org.
- Nixle: Receive general safety updates by texting your ZIP code to 888-777.
- Follow SMFD on social media:
- Monitor local radio and TV stations including:
- KQED 88.5 FM
- KCBS 740 AM
- KGO 810 AM
- Local TV stations
- Use a NOAA weather radio as a backup information source.
- Learn about LRAD sirens positioned across Southern Marin for outdoor alerts.
Action Steps:
- Sign up for both AlertMarin and Nixle.
- Adjust your phone settings to allow alerts to bypass "Do Not Disturb" mode.
- Review SMFD’s recommendations for Red Flag Warning Days, including clearing combustible debris, fueling vehicles, and charging devices.

Want to learn more about the Southern Marin Fire District? SMFD is hosting an open house at Station 1 in Sausalito from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11. Meet firefighters, prevention and administrative staff; explore engines, trucks, hazmat and rescue units; see turnout demos; and pick up plastic firefighter hats, keychains, and more. Kids in costumes (including “turnouts”) get a special treat. Station 1 is located at 333 Johnson St. in Sausalito.
