Currents recognizes community service organizations and the great work volunteers do to make Sausalito special. This week, we are spotlighting the Sausalito Woman's Club:
The Sausalito Woman's Club (SWC) has been a welcoming space for trailblazing community members since 1913, when the clubhouse was founded. Since its inception, the organization has helped open doors for women to take active roles in Sausalito's local community, while creating deep friendships along the way.
The beautiful Clubhouse located on Central Avenue, is a 107- year-old historic building designed by Julia Morgan, the first woman licensed as an architect in California. The club consists of 300 women who volunteer their time and efforts to preserve the beauty of Sausalito, support philanthropic causes, and create a dynamic center of thought and action among its members.
The women of SWC are known for their strong traditions, many of which were established by the founding members in 1913. These include Founder’s Day and High Jinks, monthly business meetings and teas, monthly programs, and impactful fundraisers.
The SWC Scholarship Recognition Fund is dedicated to supporting higher education for students from Sausalito and Marin City. For nearly 70 years, the fund has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships, totaling over $1.6 million in support. Many scholars are the first in their families to attend college. In tandem, the SWC Preservation Society raises funds and seeks charitable donations to preserve and maintain the historic clubhouse for future generations.
SWC Members are civic-minded, caring, energetic, creative, and kind. Members include singers, authors, lawyers, real estate agents, and artists. Any woman interested in joining the Sausalito Woman’s Club must be a resident for at least one year and submit an application signed by three sponsors. Application information is available on the SWC's website.
