Winter Storm update

Post Date:12/19/2025 1:00 PM
The National Weather Service is forecasting multiple rain systems to impact Marin County beginning Thursday, December 18, and lasting through next Thursday, December 25, bringing wet and unsettled weather to the region. The storm systems forecasted from Saturday through Thursday, December 25, are expected to be the strongest.

During the heaviest periods of rain, creeks and streams will rise, and localized flooding and ponding of water is possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas due to blocked culverts, drainages, and storm drains. Low-level roadways and crossings may experience flooding.

What could this mean for Marin residents?
  • Flooding: Low-lying areas or places with blocked storm drains could flood.
  • Road hazards:Roads may become slick and flooded. Debris and mudslides are possible on steep hillsides.
  • High water levels: Streams and creeks could rise, possibly reaching flood levels in some areas.
  • Wind damage: Strong winds may knock down tree branches and blow around unsecured objects.
  • Power outages: Heavy wind and rain could cause power outages.
Prepare for the storm:
  • Sign up for alerts: Register for emergency notifications at AlertMarin.org.
  • Clear drains: Rake leaves and yard debris to keep gutters and storm drains clear. Place leaves and debris in your green bin.
  • Sandbags: Use sandbags to protect flood-prone areas of your home or business. Sandbags are available at the Sausalito Corps Yard Monday through Thursday.
  • Stay informed: Visit the County's emergency portal for resources.
  • Stay home if possible: Avoid unnecessary travel; wet and flooded roads can be dangerous and can prevent you from getting to your destination. Staying home is the safest option until the storm passes. If it is an emergency, allow emergency responders to come to you.
  • Turn around, don’t drown: Never attempt to walk or drive through standing water. Do not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
  • Stay clear of downed power lines: Treat all fallen power lines as live; call 9-1-1 to report them.
