September is National Preparedness Month, and Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD) is encouraging residents to focus on something simple: small, manageable actions that add up to a much larger impact.

Preparedness does not have to happen all at once. Taking a few minutes to sign up for alerts, finding your evacuation zone, clearing combustible material near your home, updating a go bag, or checking in with a neighbor can make a meaningful difference when an emergency occurs.

Throughout September, SMFD’s Ready Southern Marin: Four Weeks. Four Actions. campaign will highlight one practical step each week:

• Know Before You Go — sign up for AlertMarin, find and save your SMFD evacuation zone, and know two ways out.
• Give Us an Hour — spend one focused hour improving Zone 0, then identify your next home-hardening or defensible-space project.
• Ready. Set. Go. — make or refresh your family emergency plan, build Go Bags, and practice evacuation.
• Prepared Together — connect with friends, neighbors, Neighborhood Response Groups, CERT, and community wildfire-preparedness resources.

Preparedness is stronger when it includes the people around you. Talk with family members, friends, older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may need extra support during an emergency. Include pets and individual household needs in your planning too.

Each week, SMFD will share a focused preparedness message and local resources through Currents and SMFD communications.
