Maintaining Sausalito's Local Control, Safety, and Providing Housing. We want to hear from you!

Since 2024, Sausalito has been engaged in a transparent public process associated with the adoption and implementation of its housing element. The City is continuing to meet the safety, traffic impact, and quality of life needs of our existing residents and businesses while complying with requirements under State Housing Element Law.

To meet legal requirements imposed on the City under State Housing Element Law, the City of Sausalito is required to ensure that its local zoning allows for the construction of at least 724 new housing units through 2031.

As a result, the Sausalito Planning Commission has recommended zoning changes as specified in the City’s Housing Element to ensure the City continues to meet the State’s legal standards. Some zoning changes will be approved by the City Council, and other zoning changes must be approved by Sausalito voters.

Private developers are utilizing new State laws to override local zoning laws in other communities. In order to achieve compliance with state housing law, Sausalito must make some important and difficult choices on zoning changes soon.

As we plan for these challenges, we want to hear from you.

Please take a moment to join the conversation and provide YOUR priorities for a strong, safe, and locally controlled Sausalito.

If you are a member of a civic organization and wish to hear a presentation from the City on these issues, please contact the Sausalito Community Development Department at (415) 289-4132 or cdd@sausalito.gov.
