About the Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit Program

To help Sausalito residents age 60 or older, younger adults with a disability and low-income Sausalito homeowners improve their home environment, the Sausalito Community Development Department has joined with Age Friendly Sausalito to create the Age Friendly Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Grant Permit Program, allowing:

  • Eligible Sausalito homeowners, or renters who have attained landlord approval, who need home adaptations due to disabilities to make accessibility improvements to their place of residence with a reduced fee or no-cost building permit; and
  • Low income Sausalito homeowners to make residential rehabilitation and energy efficiency improvements with a reduced fee or no-cost building permit. 

This program makes it more affordable to obtain building permits to make homes safer, more energy efficient, and more accommodating to the changing situations and conditions in life.

Guidelines and Eligibility Requirements

  • A Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit is a reduced fee or no-cost permit based on the project valuation cost of a maximum $20,000 for eligible improvements. A list of eligible improvements has been prepared by the Building Division of the Community Development Department.

  • Sausalito Age Friendly Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit can be utilized for individual or aggregated adaptation improvements with a project valuation cost of a maximum $20,000. Other concurrent remodel improvements that are not listed or included as eligible per the list of eligible adaptation improvements will be subject to the standard permit fees.

  • Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permits can be issued to eligible individuals for use in their place of residence, only. This will allow a renter, with landlord's permission, to make needed adaptation improvements in their rental unit using this permit, but shall not be used by a landlord or builder for global adaptation improvements to a multi-unit building. In addition, low income applicants eligible for rehabilitation and energy efficiency improvements which will be limited to homeowners only.

  • Eligible individuals must file an request to utilize the Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Program. A contractor or project representative may file an application on behalf of eligible individuals. 

  • Eligible individuals are residents of Sausalito aged 60 and older, or residents who need home adaptations due to disabilities, or low income Sausalito homeowners.

  • Eligibility for the Age Friendly Home Adaptation Permit is established by proof of age 60, or by standard proof of disability (e.g. DMV permanent disability placard or written confirmation from Medical Provider). Eligibility for the Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit is by declaring a gross household income amount.

  • Deviations or misrepresentation from approved project plans associated with an Age Friendly Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit may incur penalty fees in addition to the standard permit fee.

  • The Program will remain active only when funds are available. Once the funds are depleted, the Age Friendly Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permit Program will be suspended, until reinstituted by the City Council.

  • An eligible applicant may be issued up to two Age Friendly Home Adaptation/Equity Residential Rehabilitation Permits within a one-year period (July 1 current year to June 30 the following year), for individual or aggregated adaptation improvements with project valuation costs of a maximum of $20,000 for each home adaptation permit.

  • To apply, please first schedule an appointment with Building Inspector, Kenneth Henry by visiting the Community Development Department's Virtual Service Counter to discuss the application and apply for a permit.
