RIPA (Racial and Identity Profiling Act)

In 2015, the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (AB 953) became law, requiring all California law enforcement agencies to collect specific information on each stop (for example: traffic stop, citizen contact, etc.) and including elements of the stop circumstances and the perceived identity characteristics of the individual(s) stopped.

 AB 953 requires:

  • Data Collection for each stop that is defined as any detention by a peace officer of a person, or any peace officer interaction with a person in which the officer conducts a search.
  • The collection of data for vehicle stops, pedestrian stops, and other detentions that occur while responding to calls for service and performing other duties.

Data collected includes:

  • The perceived race or ethnicity of the person contacted
  • The perceived gender of the person contacted
  • The perceived approximate age of the person contacted
  • The reason for the contact
  • Resulting post-contact outcomes

This data must be reported to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) on an annual basis.  Sausalito PD's data collection period began on January 1, 2022, with annual reports made DOJ. Additional information about RIPA is available on the Department of Justice website
