Department Directory

Administration Department: Provides the core administrative and organizational support that keeps the City government operating. It oversees the City Manager's office, official records and elections, budgeting and financial administration, human resources and recruitment, legal coordination, and the City's information technology infrastructure.

Community Development Department: Guides how Sausalito develops and changes over time. It is primarily responsible for planning, building, and code enforcement, including reviewing development proposals, issuing planning and building permits, conducting building inspections, enforcing development regulations, and supporting long-range planning efforts such as the General Plan. The department also provides staff support to several City commissions and the City Council on land-use and development matters.

Library: Provides residents and the broader community with access to books, media, technology, information, educational resources, and community programming. The City describes the library as offering public internet access and Wi-Fi, children's programs and story times, adult lectures and discussion groups, and collections serving both adults and children. It also participates in the MARINet consortium, connecting Sausalito residents to library resources throughout Marin County.

Parks & Recreation Department: Manages Sausalito's parks, recreational facilities, programs, and community events. Its work includes providing recreational programs for different age groups, organizing City-sponsored events, issuing permits for events and filming, maintaining parks and medians, coordinating facility schedules, and planning improvements to recreational facilities. Its overall focus is using people, parks, and programs to support recreation, community engagement, and quality of life.

Sausalito Police Department: Responsible for local law enforcement and public safety. Its responsibilities include responding to calls for service and emergencies, patrol, criminal investigations, police records, parking enforcement, and specialized marine, bicycle, and motorcycle patrols. The department also emphasizes community partnerships, addressing community concerns, and maintaining public trust while working to enhance safety and quality of life in Sausalito.

Public Works Department: Responsible for the City's physical infrastructure and many of the systems people interact with every day. This includes streets, sidewalks, stairs, pathways, parking lots, trees, storm drains, public buildings, streetlights, traffic signals, and public waterfront infrastructure. Public Works also handles engineering and capital improvement projects, infrastructure maintenance, stormwater and environmental compliance, floodplain administration, and emergency response related to infrastructure.

The Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD): An independent public agency that provides fire and emergency services to Sausalito and surrounding Southern Marin communities. Its responsibilities extend beyond traditional firefighting to include emergency medical services, rescue, marine response, disaster preparedness, fire prevention/risk reduction, and community education. The District describes its mission as protecting life, property, and the environment through all-risk emergency services and community partnerships.
